Give members their own sign-in to update their details, see their giving, join groups and sign up for events, and decide when to open the directory.
The member portal is where people in your church look after their own details. With a member sign-in, they can update their profile and family, see their giving, find a group, sign up for events and answer serving requests, all from their phone.
The portal is at /my on your church's address (for example, gracechurch.phyle.org/my). Members who sign in go straight there; they never see the rest of Phyle.
What's on, and what's off to start
Members' contact details are personal, so Phyle shares nothing more widely until you decide to. Two settings under Settings › Church, in the Member portal card, start switched off:
- Let newcomers create an account: lets people who aren't in your People yet ask for a sign-in.
- Show the member directory: lets members look each other up and see each other's email and phone.
Everything else in the portal works as soon as you give someone a member sign-in. Turn the two settings on when you're ready, then select Save settings.
Give members a sign-in
Each sign-in is linked to the person's record in People. That link is how Phyle knows whose profile, family and giving to show. There are three ways in.
Invite them yourself
- Open the person in People.
- Select the menu button (three dots) next to Edit, then Give them a sign-in. (Only administrators see this.)
- The Invite someone form opens with their name and email filled in, the Member role chosen, and their record linked under Their record in People.
- Select Send invitation.
Phyle emails them a link to choose their own password. If email isn't connected yet, you'll get a link to copy and send yourself. You can also start from Settings › Users › Invite someone; pick the Member role and link Their record in People.
Let them set it up themselves
Anyone already in your People with an email address can make their own sign-in, as long as email is connected (see Email and texting):
- On your church's sign-in page, they select Create one (next to "Part of the church but no account yet?").
- They enter their name and the email address you have on file, and select Send me a link.
- Phyle emails a link to choose a password.
This works when exactly one person in People has that email and they don't already have a sign-in. To protect privacy, the page shows the same message whatever happens, so nobody can use it to find out who is on file. If someone doesn't get a link, check the email on their record, or invite them yourself.
Let newcomers ask to join
With Let newcomers create an account on, someone who isn't in People yet can use the same form. Phyle adds them to People as a Visitor and holds their sign-in for approval.
- Go to Settings › Users. Newcomers appear under Waiting for approval.
- Select Approve to email them a link to choose a password, or Decline. Declining stops them signing in; their record in People stays.
"Your account isn't connected yet"
If a member sees this, their sign-in isn't linked to a person. Go to Settings › Users, open their sign-in, choose them under Their record in People, and save.
What members can do
- Home: what's coming up (events they've signed up for and dates they're serving), serving requests waiting for a reply, their groups, and what they've given this year.
- My profile: change their photo, name, what they like to be called, birthday, phones and emergency contact. They choose whether to receive church emails and text messages, and whether to be listed in the directory. Under Sign-in details they can change the email and password they sign in with.
- Family: see their household. Adults can update the home address and phone, and add or edit their children, including grade, allergies and medical notes for check-in. They can see other adults in the household but not change them; for that, they ask the office. See Households.
- Giving: their gifts by year and by fund, pledges and recurring gifts (which they can cancel), and a printable statement for each year. Give now links to your online giving page when giving is set up. See Giving.
- Groups: the groups they're in, and Find a group to browse listed groups and join or ask to join. They can also leave a group. See Groups.
- Events: upcoming public events, with Sign me up (or Join the waitlist when it's full) and the option to cancel. See Events.
- Serving: their schedule, with Can't make it to decline, open places they can sign up for, and Time away for anyone at home. See Serving.
- Directory: when you've turned it on.
Giving needs a confirmed email
Giving history is private, so the first time a member opens Giving, Phyle asks them to confirm the email on their record with Send me a link. Until they do, they also can't change that email in their profile. This stops anyone who gets hold of a sign-in from seeing someone else's giving.
The member directory
When Show the member directory is on, members get a Directory page. It lists Members and Attenders who are listed in the directory. Visitors and inactive people never appear.
Each listing shows the person's name, photo and household name, with their email and phone. Children are listed without contact details. Searching looks at names only, so nobody can find someone by typing part of an email or phone number. Addresses are never shown.
Before you turn it on
Each person's record has a List in the member directory switch. People you add start out hidden, so nobody's email or phone is shared until you or they choose to list them. Under Show the member directory, Settings tells you how many people would appear right now, and when you turn it on, Phyle confirms how many it lists.
To choose who appears:
- Tell your church the directory is coming and how to opt in or out.
- In People, filter to the people you want (for example Members), tick them or select Select all, then choose Show in directory (or Hide from directory) and Apply. You can also change one person with List in the member directory in their Edit form.
- Then turn on Show the member directory and select Save settings.
If you'd rather list everyone you add from now on, turn on List new people in the directory in the same card. It only affects people added after you change it; nobody already in People is changed.
Records added before October 23, 2026 started out listed, so check them before you turn the directory on.
Members can change their own listing at any time with Show me in the church directory under My profile. The bottom of the directory page tells them whether they're listed. Group rosters in the portal follow the same choice: members see fellow group members who are listed, plus the group's leaders.
Privacy at a glance
- Members see only their own details, their own household and their own giving.
- Medical notes they add for a child are seen only by your children's team and staff.
- Changing the email in My profile changes where church emails go, not the email they sign in with.
- Members can stop church emails or texts from My profile. Someone who replied STOP to a text is told how to start again.
